Chapter Fifteen

Brutus claimed to know a route that would lead them from the mountain and Kader was more than happy to let the cyborg take the lead. Across the floor they went, through smoke and char. The twice-dead faceless were reduced to no more than shapes which crumbled underfoot. It was carnage on a grand scale, but Kader felt little emotion.

They arrived at a door leading from the base of the pyramid and Brutus opened it. Steps led upwards and then to a series of corridors. As they made their way onwards, Hawk told them about the devastation on the planet’s surface. She didn’t sound especially upset about incinerating a few hundred thousand square kilometers of a god’s own world.

“When we escape from this place, we’ve got the Triarch to deal with,” she said.

“It must have come for the Focus,” said Vaximiline. “Which means this place will soon be overrun with enemy.”

“That is why we’re leaving,” said Brutus.

“We have nowhere to run,” said Vaximiline.

“What do you suggest?” asked Kader angrily. “Should we give up and wait for the enemy to come to us?”

“The artifact has power. We must find what it is.”

Kader didn’t want to stop but he recognized the sense in the words. He called a halt next to a door in one of the corridor walls.

“Let’s take cover in here,” he said.

On the far side of the door was a room along with another of the tall, spindly aliens lying on a slab. Kader was sure these were the original inhabitants of this world and he believed that their return to life was interrupted when the Watchers captured Andrilax for a second time.

“Give me the Focus,” said Kader.

Brutus withdrew it from his pack and when Kader took the cube, he was surprised how little it weighed.

“A lightweight alloy, with a surface temperature several degrees below ambient.”

When Kader turned the artifact over in his hand, he felt something within. The best way he could describe it was a yearning.

“Feels like something’s missing,” he said.

“Let me see,” said Vaximiline.

Kader handed it over and the Drogol repeated the same actions of turning the cube and peering at it closely.

“That way,” said Vaximiline, lifting a hand and pointing through the ceiling. “This artifact has a partner and it is that way.” His brow furrowed. “The Amplifier.”

“How’d you know?” asked Hawk.

“I feel it.”

“Do you mean this thing is useless without the Amplifier?” asked Kader in disgust.

Vaximiline shrugged and offered the cube to anyone who wanted it. Hawk took the artifact and stared at it.

“Yep, the Amplifier is over that way,” she said. “Who wants the bad news?”

“I’ll take any news at the moment.”

“It’s on the Triarch.”

“Are you certain?”

“I get a sense of things, Cal. It helps me teleport without missing. This Focus makes everything much clearer. The Triarch is eight thousand meters above this mountain.”

“What’s it doing?”

“Deploying troops. There are four transports in the vicinity, two of them landed. I can’t be sure if these came from the Triarch or from another part of the planet.
